Upcoming BIPOC events in Vancouver.

This calendar was specifically made with the Black folx in Vancouver that feel like there is a lack of community because we’re all scattered about. Through this calendar I hope that we will all be able to create the community we’ve all been longing for and support local BIPOC-led organizations/hosts/etc. in the same breath.

Colour The Trails presents: Intro to Mountain Biking

On Saturday, May 25th try mountain biking in a safe, supportive and fun environment. There will be two sessions that day, 8:30am-12pm and 12:30pm-4pm. Don’t be intimidated by the videos of pro bikers – we will take it easy and start off on very flat and wide trails as you learn the basics of mountain biking. The sport is fun to try and the instructors and community will be there to support you!

Thanks to Ozmosis Training we will have certified instructors leading each session who are thrilled to introduce the BIPOC community to this sport, safely! We’ll also have folks from TORCA (Tri-Cities Off Road Cycling Association) to help support the event and provide some food for lunch. Essential Cycles will provide bikes and protective gear (if needed). This program is supported by Peak Performance and Marin Bikes.

General biking experience (commuting, road bike, gravel bike or being comfortable on a bike) is needed to be able to attend and enjoy this event. That means being able to ride a bike safely where you’re able to stop and turn etc. You do not need specific mountain biking experience for this event.

The event cost will include the use of a rental bike for the duration of the session, 3.5hrs of learning from certified instructors, protective gear (if needed) and a pizza/pop lunch.

This event will be in Tri-Cities/Coquitlam area (exact location given to successful applicants) and will take place rain or shine. You can also organize carpooling after you receive a registration link, via our private Facebook Group

BELOVED COMMUNITY WELL - free

Vancouver-based, Necessary Trouble Collective & Oakland-based, East Point Peace Academy present: EXPLORING BELONGING

The history of nonviolence is deeply rooted in communities of color, yet it is a lineage that has been co-opted, leaving many people who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and who work in nonviolence feeling isolated and alone.

As we create this weekly community of practice, we want to actively address this reality and create welcoming spaces for BIPOC people, where we receive practical care for the ways that we might experience discomfort when collaborating in movement spaces. This is a place to acknowledge erasure, name what we need in order to feel belonging, and cultivate ways of being that allow us to show up more fully while navigating the opportunities and challenges of collaboration to address issues in the world.

In this online workshop for self identified BIPOC, we will explore belonging through activities and inquiries that invite vulnerability and authenticity. This workshop is meant to be interactive, where we share and learn from the wisdom of everyone in the room through small and large group sharing sessions. We hope you will join us!

Surrey Art Gallery presents: I see; I breathe; I am!

Curated by the Black Arts Centre, this exhibition builds on the theme of plurality of Blackness presented in the Concealed Cultures: Visualizing the Black Vernacular exhibition. Going beyond the theme of representation, Nancy Ainomugisha and Olúwáṣọlá Kẹ́hìndé Olówó-Aké use storytelling, photography, and film to expand the conversation on how society interprets Blackness. A thought-provoking dialogue emerges from the personal narratives of these two artists that highlights the multifaceted nature of the Black female and femme experience.

Celebrate this exhibit at our opening reception on September 17 where some of the artists will be in conversation with the exhibition curators.
